Volunteer of the Year

Each year, one C&S associate is honored for outstanding service to the community.

2019 Volunteer of the Year: Drew Sander

C&S Wholesale Grocers has awarded Drew Sander, a member of the Finance team, the company’s 2019 Volunteer of the Year award.

Drew, who was badly burned as a child, created the Sander and Mattis Burn Foundation, a nonprofit organization that helps young survivors to lead normal lives after a burn injury. Drew volunteers his time in schools to educate teachers and students on what to expect when a classmate has been burned. He raises funds so that burn victims can go to specialized summer camps in NY, PA, and WA at no charge. Additionally, he makes it possible for families to attend the annual Phoenix World Burn Congress where 900 burn survivors, their caregivers, burn professionals and firefighters gather to increase their knowledge of burn recovery.

Drew is certified by SOAR (Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery), an 80-hour training that includes time in a hospital burn unit.

Drew became a candidate for the C&S Volunteer of the Year by submitting a Dollars for Doers application. A panel of company associates rated each application for spirit of volunteerism, leadership, and the desire to make a difference in people’s lives. Through the Dollars for Doers program, nonprofit organizations benefit twice: once from the C&S associates' contribution of time, and again from a C&S matching contribution of $1 per hour volunteered, to a maximum of $1,000.
