C&S Wholesale Grocers Announces 2016 Hunger Action Month Contributions

Keene, NH – C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. announces grants to 12 food banks in or near communities where the company has a presence. The grants are focused on child hunger, primarily through the BackPack Program. The program alleviates weekend hunger among food-insecure children by quietly filling back packs with nutritious food on Fridays. More than 19,000 children at 145 elementary schools or other sites will be provided with food through the grants. 

Donations were made in 10 states: 

Alabama: Montgomery Area Food Bank, Montgomery

  • Grant to pilot a School Pantry Program
  • Schools involved: 3
  • Children to be reached: 225

California: Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services, Sacramento

  • Funding for School Pantry and Children’s Farmers Markets during 2 academic years
  • Schools involved: 5
  • Children to be reached: 750

Connecticut: Foodshare, Bloomfield

  • Grant for the BackPack Program and School Pantry Program during 2 academic years
  • Schools involved: 11
  • Children to be reached: 1,800

Florida: Feeding Northeast Florida, Jacksonville

  • Support for the SnackPack Program in Duval County during 2 academic years
  • Schools involved: 2
  • Children to be reached: 787

     Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, Orlando

  • Grant for the Holiday BackPack Program
  • Schools involved: 7
  • Children to be reached: 600

     Feeding South Florida, Miami

  • Grant for the School Pantry Program
  • Schools involved: 1
  • Children to be reached: 310

Hawaii: Hawaii Foodbank, Honolulu

  • Support for the Food for Keiki (kids) Program

Indiana: Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, Indianapolis

  • Funding for the BackSacks program
  • Schools involved: 81
  • Children to be reached: 4,100

Louisiana: Second Harvest Food Bank of New Orleans, New Orleans

  • Grant for the BackPack Program in Hammond during 2 academic years 
  • Schools involved: 2 
  • Children to be reached: 71 

Maryland: Maryland Food Bank, Baltimore 

  • Grant to help feed children in Cecil County through School and Mobile Pantries during 2 academic years 
  • Schools involved: 2 
  • Children to be reached: 400 

Massachusetts: Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, North Hatfield

  • Support toward feeding children through a mobile pantry 
  • Schools involved: 17 
  • Children to be reached: 8,000 

New Hampshire: New Hampshire Food Bank, Manchester 

  • Support to supply milk to children in the Monadnock Region 
  • Food pantries involved: 13 
  • Children to be reached: 600 

Additional Contributions During Hunger Action Month in September, the C&S Family of Companies employees donated more than 26,200 pounds of food from an annual Food for Kids drive. C&S is matching each pound collected from its employees, with a $1 contribution to Feeding America for child hunger initiatives. Since 2003, food donations by employees have totaled over 136 tons. 

In time for holiday meals, the company is donating 8,120 turkeys to 25 Feeding America member food banks across the U.S. The turkeys will provide an estimated 200,000 meals for people in need.
