First Book provides access to new books and educational resources for children in need. To date, First Book has distributed more than 150 million books to programs and schools serving children from low-income families throughout the United States and Canada. By making new, high-quality books available on an ongoing basis, First Book is transforming the lives of children in need and elevating the quality of education.
Together, First Book and C&S created the Food for the Body, Food for the Mind initiative that provides kids with books to take home and call their own. This program helps build a love of reading that is essential for kids without access to books at home. Since 2007, Food for the Body, Food for the Mind has helped connect hundreds of schools and programs to First Book's resources and placed over 330,560 free, brand-new books into the hands of children who might not otherwise have books of their own.
In 2014, C&S and First Book launched a new initiative, Food Direct, which brought non-perishable food to the First Book Marketplace for the first time in First Book’s 22-year history. Food Direct addresses a huge unmet need of educators and the kids they serve that come to school hungry and unprepared to learn. To date, hundreds of children have benefitted from this new program and many more will as Food Direct expands.
Our support to First Book is a long-term investment. We believe that improving literacy...inspiring children to love books and reading...leads to increased opportunities, better outcomes in school and in life, and decreased poverty.
