Planning a Workplace Garden

Interest

  • Seek the support of Senior Leadership. Their committed support is critical for a workplace garden program to move forward
  • After securing support from top management, survey employees to find out about their interests and skill sets. This will aid in the design of a garden that is an appropriate size, and assess which educational opportunities will help ensure gardener success and satisfaction with the project.

Workplace Physical Feature

  • Careful thought about site selection and garden infrastructure (water, storage, security) early in the planning process will ensure a site that best suits the needs of your site and gardeners’ goals.
  • Communication/Outreach: signs and/or labels for garden beds, communication boards, donation logs and other features in the garden and workplace
  • Considerations for accessibility, maintenance, and day-to-day use of garden beds and pathways; may include mowing, composting, delivery, etc.
  • Water system: hose length and diameter, water pressure, above vs. below ground, sprinklers or watering cans
  • Preventing Crop Damage: fencing, netting, below-bed barriers to guard against pests
  • Storage Structures: tool shed, compost bins, food storage containers for donations
  • Relaxation/Wellness: benches, shade structures, pathways, environmentally conscious landscaping

  • Set realistic, measurable goals
  • Prepare garden sites
  • Provide ongoing educational support, including workshops and partner resources
  • Develop systems for communications, garden maintenance and community donations
  • Collaborate with hunger relief agencies to determine donation needs and processes
  • Regular communication and promotion within organization and broader community
  • Evaluation plan (surveys & other measures)
  • Document garden logistics, systems, activities as well as challenges and successes. Share them with gardeners, future staff, leadership and the broader corporate community
