Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan

On March 11, 2011 a massive 9.0 earthquake followed by a tsunami devastated parts of the island nation of Japan. The impact of both has been devastating to individuals and to the infrastructure there. Hospitals and institutions near the epicenter and on the coast are struggling to evaluate the situation as the government grapples with the huge scale of this disaster.

C&S Responds

In support of the people of Japan, C&S Wholesale Grocers has made a $10,000 donation to the American Red Cross. The American Red Cross is supporting the Japanese Red Cross, which has 62 medical relief teams with mobile medical clinics going to many of the hardest hit areas.

Additionally, C&S is on the International Red Cross' call list to supply food, water or supplies. However preparations made by the Japanese government, plus the humanitarian assistance and supplies pouring in from countries around the world (especially the U.S.), may mean that the need for those in-kind items might not be as acute as it was after the Haiti earthquake in 2010 and the tsunami in southeast Asia in 2004.

Ways to Help

International aid groups have (or are sending) teams to carry out relief and recovery efforts in Japan. Please consider making a contribution to reinforce their important work. Here are links to just two well-respected resources:

The American Red Cross is the nation's premier emergency response organization, offering humanitarian care to the victims of war and natural disasters with the aim of preventing and relieving suffering.

InterAction is the largest alliance of U.S.-based international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) focused on the world's poor and most vulnerable people.
