Eliminating Hunger
Hunger is a growing problem in America. Rising unemployment, the home mortgage crisis and the collapse of the financial markets have added millions of Americans to the ranks seeking food assistance.
As a leader in the food industry and logistics, C&S is in a position to make a difference for children, families, veterans and senior citizens who are food insecure. And we do. As part of National Hunger Action Month 2009, C&S employees from across the country donated a total of 21,426 pounds of food for the Hungry Kids Food Drive. We are also involved through investments in the important work of three of the nation’s foremost hunger-alleviation organizations:
and the Congressional Hunger Center.

Hunger Report 2010:
Who is food insecure in America? They're our friends and neighbors. The cashier at your local coffee shop. The senior citizen who lives in the small apartment down the street. The family around the corner struggling to make ends meet. Each week, nearly 37 million people in America receive assistance from food banks, community kitchens and hunger relief organizations. That's one in eight including 14 million children and almost three million seniors.
Feeding America shares these sobering facts about the households they serve in a study, Hunger in America 2010:
76% (10 million) are food insecure, meaning they do not always know where they will find their next meal.
36% are experiencing food insecurity with hunger meaning they are sometimes completely without a source of food.
79% (11 million) of households with children served are also food insecure
Of the 37 million people the Feeding America network serves:
70% have incomes below the federal poverty line.
The average monthly income is $940.
36% have one or more adults who is working.
10% are homeless.
46% report having to choose between paying for food and paying for utilities or heating fuel.
39% must choose between paying for food and paying their rent or mortgage.
34% have to choose between paying for food and paying for medicine or medical care.
