KEENE, N.H. - Hunger is a one of America's most pressing social and public health issues and C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. is taking action to address it. In conjunction with Feeding America's national Hunger Action Month in September 2008, thousands of C&S employees nationwide donated almost 12 tons of food as part of the company's sixth annual food drive. For every pound of food donated by employees, C&S matched it with a $1 donation to Feeding America's Back Pack Program.
The theme of the C&S food drive was "Food for Kids," calling attention to the persistent problem of childhood hunger. The U.S. statistics are staggering: As many as 12 million kids live in households that are food insecure.
National Hunger Action Month, organized by Feeding America (the nation's food bank network) is an initiative that has grown from a day-long focus on the issue of hunger to a month of activities from coast-to-coast.
"Hunger Action Month was something that our employees were ready, willing and able to take part in," said Gina Goff, director of corporate giving at C&S. "Particularly in this economy, we all know that families are stretched and we want to do something to help local kids who don't have enough to eat."
At C&S, "child-friendly" foods like peanut butter, juice boxes and cereal were collected and delivered to the closest statewide or regional food bank. From there, the food was distributed to local agencies (community kitchens, food pantries, youth organizations, etc.) that assist families with children in need of food assistance.
C&S community involvement programs support initiatives to stop hunger and to promote the health and enrichment of communities that are home to the company's employees and facilities.
