Grants will support a variety of needs at 11 food banks around the country
Keene, NH - C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. today announced corporate grants to anti-hunger organizations in or near communities where the employees of C&S and its subsidiary and affiliate companies, work and live. The grants will support a variety of needs at 11 food banks in California, Maryland, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Vermont which are part of the America's Second Harvest:
Second Harvest Food Bank of San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties
A grant from C&S will help the food bank's Senior Brown Bag program to deliver bags of nutritious supplemental groceries to low-income seniors in these counties near Stockton, CA.
Community Food Bank
The Fresno, CA area has been ranked first in the nation in concentration of people living in poverty, even above hurricane-ravaged New Orleans. Because the need is so dire, C&S is helping the Community Food Bank with "Free Food Fridays," a program that distributes fresh, nutritious food to individuals, families, children and seniors who are struggling in this economically depressed area.
Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano
A grant from C&S will help the food bank purchase a trailer to be used to pick up and deliver food donations for distribution to over 100 agencies in the Sacramento, CA area, including soup kitchens, shelters for battered women and children, and community kitchens.
Maryland Food Bank
Support from C&S will reach people living below the poverty level in Harford County through increased visits by the Maryland Food Bank's mobile food pantry. Deliveries three times a month will bring over 432,000 pounds of nutritious food to the local shelters, community kitchens and food pantries.
New Hampshire Food Bank
Funding will support the food bank's work in the Monadnock Region of NH. It will also result in a 30% increase in food distribution to Keene, NH families by enabling the food bank to add one more delivery to the area per month.
Community Food Bank of New Jersey
A grant from C&S will help the food bank with nutritional education programs targeting children who participate in local (free) Kids Cafes, and students in the Food Service Training Academy (a 14 week class proving skills and training to low-income people for entry-level food service jobs.) The program will also help educate staff or volunteer cooks at food assistance organizations who prepare meals for their clients.
Food Bank of Western New York
Support from C&S will help the food bank purchase a forklift for its warehouse to expedite the delivery of much-needed food. A portion of the grant will also be used to expand the food bank's "Good Cookin'" program which will provide nutrition education to approximately 150 families.
Central Pennsylvania Food Bank
Each month, with assistance from C&S, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank's Elder Share program provides nearly 500 seniors with supplemental food boxes that include fresh fruits and vegetables as well as nutritional/healthcare information.
Northeast Regional Pennsylvania Food Bank
In and around the community of Dunmore, PA the Northeast Regional Food Bank serves 41 pantries, two soup kitchens, 22 group homes and 12 shelters, along with numerous programs for children and seniors. With C&S support, the food bank is introducing a nutrition education program to each of those local agencies, teaching families how to plan, shop for, and cook healthy meals.
Harvest Hope Food Bank
The organization recently added two more counties to its service area and as a result will impact thousands of people needing food assistance. Support from C&S will enable the food bank to operate a new branch in Greenville, SC.
Vermont Food Bank
Support from C&S for the VT Food Bank's Neighborhood Pantry Express will help 75,000 pounds of food to be given away to low-income people in the southeastern portion of the state.
