Keene, NH December 7, 2009 -- C&S Wholesale Grocers' focus on community involvement is attracting national attention from the food industry. The Griffin Report for Food Marketing has named C&S its 2009 Wholesale Innovator of the Year. C&S was lauded for service to its customers, as well as its speed and efficiency. The company was also recognized for its commitment to investing in communities where it does business. C&S Wholesale Grocers' community involvement focuses on four core areas including elminating hunger, encouraging volunteerism, strengthening communities and protecting the environment. To eliminate hunger the company just completed its Thanksgiving turkey donations initiative. As an expression of caring for neighbors in need and in response to difficult economic conditions, C&S and individual employees donated 7172 turkeys to Feeding America member food banks. Recent statistics indicate that 1 in 7 U.S families is struggling to get enough to eat and that approximately 17 million American children are hungry. In response, C&S increasaed its turkey donations by on-third this year to meet the increased need.
To encourage volunteerism C&S participated in Made a Difference Day. the nationwide initiative inspire more than 500 C&S employees from 17 different facilities to roll up their sleeves and volunteer in teams for community-based organizations.
To strengthen communities, C&S warehouse and distributions centers across the country are currently participating in various holiday initiatives in partnership with local nonporifts. Some of these initiatives include Adopt-a-Family, Toys for Tots and warm clothing dirves.
To help protect the environment, C&S continues to invest in network optimization technology to reduce the fuel distribution trucks use. This amounts to an estimate savings of 400,000 gallons of diesel fuel each year.
