Keene, NH - In celebration of National Volunteer Week, C&S Wholesale Grocers is pleased to announce that Maria Precht is the company's 2010 Volunteer of the Year. Maria is active with the Junior League of Annapolis, a nonprofit organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism and improving the community.
A Human Resources Supervisor for C&S in Upper Marlboro, Md., Maria says she admires the company's dedication to community and is honored to be named Volunteer of the Year. "Volunteering builds stronger communities," said Maria. "And, someone who gives their time to be a positive role model can make a lifetime of difference in a child's life."
Maria volunteers with children and homeless families. She recently distributed 1,000 bags of school supplies to children at local schools through the League's Book Bag program. To raise awareness about childhood obesity, Maria taught healthy eating choices to kids in her community. She has prepared and served meals for area homeless people, provided assistance with transitional housing options and offered skills-based job readiness training. Additionally, Maria volunteers as Vice President of the League's Finance Committee.
"Maria is indispensable!" said Eileen Thaden of the Junior League of Annapolis. "Her insight into matters relating to Human Resources, production, distribution and working with the public is vital to our organization."
Maria became a candidate for the C&S Volunteer of the Year award by submitting a C&S Dollars for Doers application. A panel of company employees rated each application for spirit of volunteerism, leadership and the desire to make a difference in people's lives. Through the Dollars for Doers program, nonprofit organizations benefit twice, once from the C&S employee's contribution of time, and again from a C&S matching contribution of $1 per hour volunteered, to a maximum of 1,000 hours or $1,000.
C&S has selected a Volunteer of the Year since 2005. Past winners include:
2009 - Lem Rodriguez, Bethlehem, Pa, Council of Spanish Speaking Organizations
2008 - Don LaChance, Windsor Locks, Conn., Boy Scouts of America
