2008 Charity Golf Outing

"Hole in One!" for Children with Cancer

Keene, NH  – One of the largest charity golf events in northern New England, the C&S Wholesale Grocers Charity Golf Outing, raised $1.125 million for cancer charities benefiting children and communities. The 23rd annual event surpassed previous milestones both for participants and funds donated.

Almost 1,000 people, including C&S customers, vendors, and food industry leaders, enjoyed two days of golf in Vermont and Massachusetts. At dinners following golfing, checks were presented to these highly-respected nonprofit organizations:

  • $750,000 Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center
    • $500,000 to the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth (Lebanon, NH) for their pediatric oncology unit
    • $250,000 to the Cheshire Health Foundation (Keene, NH)
  • $200,000 to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Boston, MA) for cancer research
  • $125,000 to The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp (Ashford, CT) for children battling cancer to experience going to camp
  • $25,000 to CureSearch/Children’s Oncology Group (Bethesda, MD) for public awareness initiatives
  • $25,000 to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York, NY) for clinical trials

Leaders from Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth presented a $1 million donation achievement award to C&S, and representatives from The Hole In the Wall Gang Camp presented a framed letter and award from actor and camp Founder Paul Newman, acknowledging the commitment of C&S to the organization. Rick Cohen, Chairman and CEO of C&S accepted both awards.

In addition to thanking the charities for their important work on behalf of children with cancer, their families and medical teams, he said, “We’re proud that the funds we raised with help give kids battling cancer a chance.”

C&S supports initiatives to stop hunger and to promote the health and enrichment of communities that are home to the company's employees and facilities. Among honors received in recent years, the company was named the 2006 America's Second Harvest Grocery Distributor of the Year, and the 2007 Supermarket News Community Service Award recipient.
